#SPECIAL UPDATE: UNSPEAKABLE RULES (AKA a sneak peek into Elder Mythos rules)
almost 2 years ago – Tue, Apr 16, 2024 at 10:05:35 AM

We salute you Elder Entities, today we take a journey into the rules of Elder Mythos!

An Elder Mythos session is like a short-movie: a Scenario is nothing more than the initial situation that establishes what the narrative at the table will be about.

Within the Scenario (e.g., Paris, 1968, as the protests of the student movement burst out), there are a number of thematic Points of Interest (e.g. Le Café de Flore, the haunt of the brightest minds of the time) with which both Entities and human NPCs (the Eldritch Master's Resources) will have to interact. Each Point of Interest has a related Objective (e.g. Le Café de Flore is close to the Dreamlands due to the imaginative charge of the intellectual personalities there gathered - winning their minds may be a great idea).

Each Scenario has a thematic Map that serves as the game board.

With the Scenario creation option, all players participate in shared worldbuilding, guided by build-up questions and random tables.

To determine who starts, draw the initiative order at the beginning of each round (as you usually do in the Year Zero Engine). You can use some of the cards in the Card Deck of the Unspeakable Box or use ordinary playing cards.

Each player must have a personal reserve composed of 9 dice (differentiated by color from the other players), as well as another set of dice which the player will share.

During their turn, a player may have their Entity perform 2 Actions.

For example, Declare an Objective, which costs 1 Action, requires placing a die on a Point of Interest on the Map, manifesting their Entity's intention to acquire the related Objective, and using one of the Entity's Manifestations to narratively describe how the location is affected.

To continue the previous example, the next turn the player could Acquire that Objective, which costs 2 Actions, by rolling their dice pool (see below) they will have to obtain at least one success, unless another Entity has placed dice on the same Objective, in which case an Opposed Roll is made (see below). There may be an EM Resource (a human NPC) on that same Objective, which will allow the EM to participate in the Opposed Roll with the EM Resource's dice pool.

The Card Deck will contain:10 The Final Card Deck will contain 60 cards: 10 Initiative Cards, 13 Entity Cards, 3 Interference Cards, 20 Eldritch Master Resources Cards, 6 Collateral Effect Cards, 6 Entity Action Cards, 1 Interference Action Card, 1 Complication Card

Players will also have other action options on the Scenario, such as investing dice to Grow a Resource (a Cult, Creature, or Minister). Each Resource has a Tier that can be used as a bonus to the Entity's dice pool when the Resource is used. A player can also Attack directly an enemy Resource, whether it is a Resource of another Entity or an Eldritch Master Resource.
What kind of Resources, you may be wondering. For example, Cthulhu but also Mother Hydra and Father Dagon, can access the Unique Resource "Deep Ones" - when used near a Point of Interest on the Scenario Map that is close to water, adds +1 to its Tier.

But the Eldritch Master will not stand by and watch the Entities' plans unfold. Through EM Interferences, the EM will be able to act in the scene introducing their Resources (human NPCs, such as The Detective) and obstructing the actions of the Entities using them.

Each EM Resource has a dice pool with which to counter the direct and indirect actions of the Entities, and some even possess Special Rule

The Detective, for example, is able to actively thwart an Entity's strategy by investigating a specific Point of Interest on the Map, removing dice that the Entity invested there.

To build their dice pool, a player must first describe the action their Entity is taking.

Build the Pool: When it is time to make a roll, the EM will tell the player which Attribute of their Entity to use. The number of dice in the pool is equal to the Attribute Rank named by the EM. Any +1D or -1D (or similar) modifiers add and remove dice from the pool respectively.

Attributes: The four Attributes are Fear, Madness, Dream and Violence. The EM decides which one is the most appropriate for the action described by the player. When creating your character, you can freely distribute 6 Ranks among these Attributes. Each Entity provides a bonus to the Rank of an Attribute, based on its methods of action in the material world. An Attribute can have a maximum of 4 and a minimum of 0.

Resources: If an Entity Resource can be used for the roll, add +1D for each Resource Tiers. Only one Resource may be employed at a time.

Advantages and Disadvantages: If there is any contextual advantage in the narrative, add +1D to the pool. In case of disadvantage, subtract -1D from the pool.

0 Dice: If the pool is reduced to 0 dice, you can still roll 2D6, but you must keep the lower result only.

To be successful in an action, you must obtain at least a 6 as a result.

If you obtain more than a 6, you achieve a Catastrophic Success. The action succeeds extraordinarily well, but Catastrophic Collateral Effects occur.

If you don't obtain any 6, this means that the Entity has failed in its Action and some Complication will manifest.

An example of a Collateral Effect obtainable due to a Catastrophic Success is: Chaos - The current round ends, and a new round begins. All players and all the EM Resources draw the Initiative again.

There are situations where two or more players, or one or more players and the EM, will be pitted against each other in determining who gets something or who wins in a confrontation.

To win an opposed roll, you must obtain more successes than the opponents.

Any Complications or Catastrophic Successes obtained apply as usual.

In the case of a tie, no one succeeds in completing the action they wanted to perform.

Each Entity begins the first session (and only the first) with 1 Plot Point. Unused Plot Points during one session transfer to the next.

Entities earn 1 Plot Point when:

-They obtain a Catastrophic Success.

-They complete an Objective of their Design.

They earn 2 when:

-They complete an Objective of their Great Design.

Each Scenario Objective acquired earns the player Plot Points.

A player may spend one Plot Point to re-roll their dice pool after obtaining an outcome they do not like. This can be done only once per roll.

A player may spend a Plot Point also to Grow a Resource

The number of Plot Points held by players at the end of the Scenario determines the Final Situation - who won the session. At the end of the Game Campaign, the number of Plot Points held by the players determines who wins the campaign. Use them strategically.

The Card Deck will contain 60 cards: 10 Initiative Cards, 13 Entity Cards, 3 Interference Cards, 20 Eldritch Master Resources Cards, 6 Collateral Effect Cards, 6 Entity Action Cards, 1 Interference Action Card, 1 Complication Card

Power- Each Entity is endowed with a special Power that affects the game mechanics.

For example, Cthulhu has this Power:

Power: Ancient Effigy

Costs 1 Action and 2 Plot Points. Have one of your ancient effigies recovered by an EM Resource who will quickly go mad performing obscene rituals and actions. At the beginning of the next round, take possession of the EM Resource: it becomes a Tier 2 Hierophant.

Entities can acquire new Powers by winning Scenarios or acquiring certain Objectives on the Map.

For example, it would be worthwhile to acquire the Power "Portal to Carcosa" in the rioting Paris of 1968. This Additional Power allows the Entity that comes into possession of it to send an EM Resource to the ghostly city of Carcosa, whose soaring black ruinous spires instill madness into its heart, reducing the Tier of that Resource.

Design and Great Design - Each Entity has a list of narrative and mechanical Objectives, different from the Scenario Objectives. The Entity's Design Objectives are easier to acquire. When a player meets their requirements, they immediately earn 1 Plot Point. The Objectives of the Great Design are more complex. When a player meets the requirements, they immediately earn 2 Plot Points.

For example, Cthulhu has these lists of Design and Great Design:

Design:

-Obtain Chaos as a Collateral Effect

-Acquire a Scenario Objective using VIOLENCE

-In a single Round, place 2 dice on one or more Points of Interest by the water while Declaring an Objective

-Acquire an Objective using an EM Resource that you have taken possession of

The Great Design:

-Win an Opposed Roll against Hastur

-Take possession of 2 EM Resources

-Successfully acquire a Cthulhi, Unique Resource

These are the basic mechanics of Elder Mythos! We are currently playstesting the game with our development team! Please feel free to ask us any further questions, our development team will get back to you!
